Exploring Generative Fill on Photoshop

Photoshop recently launched its Generative AI version. As a UX designer, I don’t rely heavily on Photoshop. But it was fun developing my prompt skills.

If you are on the Beta version you will notice a new toolbar on your screen. You can click on “Select Subject”, which will allow you to hover over different areas of your image and highlight the selection you want to edit.

If you are not able to target the area accurately, you can also use the standard selection tools or the pen tool. You can Shift+Click to select multiple objects as well.

Once your selection is active it will give you a “Generative Fill” option. This is where you enter your prompts.

The shape of the selection does impact the overall quality. Here are some of the prompts and the results.

1. Adding a water body to this image

2. Adding rainbow sprinkles to this ice cream

3. Removing people from this image

4. Making this cat look professional

5. Trying on a new dress

Overall I feel like it’s got a long way to go, but excited to see how this develops in the future, pretty sure the results are going to get sharper and actually usable very soon.
